What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest healing practices in the world, with roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that stretch back approximately 5,000 years. It is a sophisticated system of medicine that views the body not as a collection of isolated parts, but as an interconnected whole — one in which physical health, emotional well-being, and spiritual vitality are inseparable.

Today acupuncture is practised throughout the world and is increasingly recognized in Western medicine as an effective complementary treatment for a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain to digestive issues to stress-related illness.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

At the heart of Chinese medical theory is the concept of chi (also written as qi) — the vital life force or energy that flows through every living being. This energy travels along precise pathways in the body called meridians. There are fourteen primary meridians, each connected to specific organs, tissues, and functions.

When chi flows freely and in balance, the body is in a state of good health. When the flow of chi is disrupted, blocked, or deficient — whether by injury, illness, emotional stress, poor diet, or environmental factors — symptoms begin to appear. These symptoms are the body's signal that something in the system is out of balance.

Acupuncture works by inserting fine needles at specific points along the meridians to restore the free and harmonious flow of chi, thereby addressing the root cause of symptoms rather than simply suppressing them.

Your Assessment

A thorough assessment is the foundation of effective acupuncture treatment. Your practitioner will gather information using the classic diagnostic methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine:

This holistic intake allows the practitioner to identify the underlying pattern of imbalance and design a treatment specifically tailored to your needs.

Your Treatment

Acupuncture needles are extraordinarily fine — much thinner than a hypodermic needle — and most clients are surprised to find the insertions are nearly painless. Only sterile, single-use needles are used; they are never reused or shared between clients.

Needles are inserted at carefully selected meridian points and left in place for a period of time — typically 20 to 30 minutes — during which most clients experience a deep state of relaxation. Some may feel a slight heaviness, tingling, or warmth around the needle sites; these sensations are considered signs that the chi is responding to treatment.

Depending on the nature of your condition, your practitioner may also recommend Chinese herbal formulas to complement the acupuncture treatment and support your healing between sessions. These recommendations will always be discussed with you and take into account any medications you are currently taking.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions required varies considerably from person to person and depends on the nature of the condition, how long it has been present, and how the individual responds to treatment. Acute conditions often respond more quickly than long-standing chronic issues. Your practitioner will give you a realistic sense of the expected treatment course after your initial assessment and will re-evaluate regularly as your treatment progresses.
